To quote M. Scott Peck, author of The Road Less Traveled, life is difficult. We all face unique challenges in our lives, and they can be gruesome. The real challenge is facing our personal dilemmas with grace and integrity because we never know who is watching us.
Even though we can get caught up in our day-to-day struggles and day-to-day responsibilities, we have people that look up to us, whether we’re aware of it or not. It could be our children, a colleague, a mentee or protege, or anyone in between.
When we get too wrapped up in our own lives, we forget that these people are watching our every move. Not in a creepy way (in most cases), but in an admirable way. In a way that shows they yearn for a positive role model. And when we get too absorbed in the inevitable challenges our life throws at us, we can act impulsively, and in those moments we don’t set the best example that we can. When we do that, we aren’t providing the light that those proteges need.
With that said, think about this every now and again when you find yourself wrapped up, mentally or emotionally, in the challenges that life heaves at you. Find the ways that you can overcome these obstacles with integrity. Not for yourself, but for all of those around you that may be looking up to you.
Because at the end of the day, you never know who’s watching.
